Welcome to Spring 07!

Time has certainly flown by!  Cruise Prep is in full swing, Seniors talking about Graduation (Yeah May 5th!)New classes are in full swing and it seems that people are ready for them to end already!

Like always i have been running around like crazy.  This semester is my "official" start to my SVO degree.  And i must say it is certainly a change from the marine biology realm of life.

When i last wrote i stated how Senior Research projects were winding to an end and being presented.  Well grades are now done and the Marine Bio/Marine Sci kids of the class of 07 are breathing a sigh of relief while the class of 06' is starting to feel the heat.  Best of luck to them but i am QUITE happy to be  done with my project!

here are photos from Sr. Research!

Sr Research

however, because of the slowness of trying to download photos up on to this, i am going to start posting photos somewhere else and doing links to them.  i apologize if this creates problems for people.  however the time it takes to upload around one photo is deterring me beyond belief.

i have many photos to show y'all from my SCC class (Small Craft Construction) in this class we are building two Gem boats, they are 13.5 wooden boats, typically sail however they can support an outboard engine.  For this lab we meet twice a week and it is certainly an adventure learning how to use all the tools and how to put a boat together.  the class is set up so each class does the finishing work on a boat while starting a brand new boat that following classes will finish.

I am also in Seamanship lab where we are learning to tie knots.  Though it may look like we are tying each other up, i assure you that we are not!  We were practicing tying  knots that were going around a winch.  and well without a winch we needed a body, and lucky for us we got a volunteer!

I also made it to one an MMA hockey game recently!  Certainly quite an adventure, and sadly so even though we didn't win, it still was a good game :)

Well till the next update!

The end is NEAR!!!

Well ladies and Gents, a HUGE sigh of relief is about to come from the Marine Bio and Marine Science class of 2007.  By around this time tomorrow most of us will have all of our papers handed in.. For those of you who don't know what i am talking about i am talked about our Sr Research papers.  Every person in the Marine Bio or Marine Sci dept must come up with their own project idea and submit a proposal *which was last semester* then conduct our field work, then submit a formal report.  then give a presentation (the easy part!) the biggest part will all be done by tomorrow.  for most there are little problems going, for others... well lets put it this way i think it might end up being a long night.

we've also completed lowering the lifeboats for Nauti Sci Lab.  I've posted some photos of our lab lowering the boat.  its defiantly an adventure learning how to do them, and a messy job.  but a useful trait to have.

Nauti Sci Lab Photo

Besides that not much is happening, just alot of tests, alot of final papers, and alot of people looking forward to a nice long Thanksgiving break!

till next time!

End of the Semster Madness

Everything right now feels like one stressful mad dash to the end!!!

In less then 5 days my Senior Research paper is due.. This is big number one stress right here.. if i don't pass this paper then i am not allowed to graduate.  its like the engineer and deckies coasties exams, except if they don't pass those they still graduate, i do not!  Some exciting news, found on my end, when it comes to my project is that i was able to find some significance.  which means that i found Anemones which go from normal sanity levels to high, do change their contraction rate to a noticeable agree. Go me.. Now comes the question of what does this mean in the long run... which in that case I'm not inertly sure..

Stress factor Number 2.. MONEY MONEY MONEY!!!  Finally after 4 years  the concept of "Poor College Kid in debt" is starting to hit me.. and i must say really isn't a very good feeling.. and this whole stress keeps building over the fact that out of my 4 jobs on campus some are slacking on the whole paying me.. Which happens everyone has busy lives, and the way the checking system is here its a little screwy to learn.

Stress factor Number 3: Signing up for classes!  i must state, every college has their problems with this.  However it still doesn't make it any easier to deal with.. Seeing I'm a double major I'm having problems getting into all the classes i need to start my SVO and finish my Marine BIo.  Its hectic, but i must say i truly love Mrs.Allen, she is the best when it comes to solving registrar problems!

Besides that its kinda crazy to think that some of my closest friends are graduating and leaving in December.. :( Where did all the time go??  And to make matters worse its all of my friends who are girls.. this is going to make Ben and Jerry's night a very lonely night, unless i start conditioning some of my guy friends into having self-pity parties with me.

I Hate to admit to this but for once i really am begining to believe that my mother is right, time flies by quicker then you can imagine.. Last i knew it was September.. now its November, nearly Thanksgiving.  Where did October go??

Alright well another Work job is calling my name! till next time.

Slacking Yet Again..

Hey Everyone!!

Just a quicky, here are all the photos i took for the Open House that we hosted a few weekends back.  Attenance was awesome! Questions were great!

Open House

In the Photos you will see Prof. Verde, of the Marine Bio Dept along with three other of my friends who are all Srs in the Marine Bio and Marine Sci dept.  Enjoy!

Rain Rain Go Away..

So for the last 2 days now, I believe, it has been raining off and on up here.  One of the Joys of being on the coast of Maine.  Because of this rain coats and in some cases rain boots have been sported.

Last night ABC hosted another successful Open Mic night!  This is certainly a display of how the MMA music seance is picking up.  Not only do we have one student in a band called X-ray Actress.  Who came up to MMA and played last week.   Another very popular group on campus is Secondhand Satire, which consists of 4 Guys on campus who play cover songs on some local favorites and are quite a hit at both Open Mic Nights, So much that later this year ABC will be helping them present their very own show.

Besides the rain and the fog and all the fun stuff that comes along with that. Campus has been fairly quite.  Personally I've just been running around trying to finish my Sr Research Project.  Today I found out that I now appear on the Walla Walla College Marine Station website!  For those of you who are unsure on what I am talking about.  This summer I had the opportunity to go to Anacortes, WA and conduct my Sr. Research project.  Without this project I am unable to graduate from my degree, so as one can imagine its a very big deal.  Our projects are something that we as a student design.  I spent all last semester coming up with my idea and working into a proposal, then spent the summer in Washington conducting the work and now am spending this semester writing up my results!  A bit of a task but one that I will be VERY happy to be done with soon!

Well till next time..

Hoorah For Sailing!

I just thought I'd share some photos from this past weekend.  This weekend we had three seprate sailing trips going on.  These pictures are just from all of us trying to gather up our belongings and fit into the vans and occassionally taking a quick nap!

I've decied to try to add some photos from my Phy 2 lab.  These photos were taken last week durning lab where we were playing with tuning forks.

Dscn0037This is my lab partner having a little too much fun at the start of lab..  Thankfully we finally stopped playing with the tuning forks and actually got to work.

Dscn0036At the other end of our lab bench are my other two psedo lab partners.  In class we are only allowed to pair up to at most 3.  However sometimes it helps to ask outside of your group, and this is where we head to.

Dscn0040However, sometimes the people at the end of the table cant help you either.  SO thats when you call in for renforcements.  Such as the Prof. of the lab.  :)

Other then that the MMA news around campus, is the wet lab is slowly making progress yet getting there and looking WONDERFUL! So exciting!  It finally feels/looks like we are a real college with a real wet lab! Now all we need is the running sea water!  Most of the landscaping on the front lawn is done and looking nice.  Of course like every year around this time, leaves fall everywhere and now the nice grass is covered...

We are starting to reach that time of the year when all it seems to be is test after test and paper after paper.  As it is I had 2 test just today! However, Thanksgiving break is coming soon enough! How exciting!

This weekend the Women's Sailing Team is heading to Yale for a regatta.  Hopefully many pictures are to come from this weekend and will be posted next week.

Till then...

So im a little behind..

Alright Greetings Everyone! Sorry for being so behind on all of this. I attempted to add a few photos from ABC’s Student Origination Fair that was held last Tuesday. However I am still new to using typepad, and although it tells me the photos are uploaded and I can see them, I still haven’t figured out how to get it so you all can see them! I am working on it though! This past week has been beyond busy. Like I said ABC had their student origination fair, this is a fair that’s put on for not only the freshmen but current students of MMA to see what groups there are out there for them to join, and for the local community to get to know some of the students and invite them to things around town. ABC also goes and have inflatables come for the student to play on. This year however, we all showed up only to find that the company in which we rent them from had yet to arrive!! After a bit of wondering and worrying that something happened to them, the wonderful guy from Party Visions showed up. Come to find out all was taken care of and the inflatables were quickly set up and enjoyed by all!! Not only did we have that but this past weekend was also Homecoming weekend! The weekend started with yet again another ABC event. This time we had a cookout on Friday for the students. Along with a dunk tank, much to many of the MUGS enjoyment seeing many of the MUGS MTOS were in there. And yet again more inflatables, all of which arrived on time. After a successful cook out the 1st day, there was a football on Saturday followed by Rugby’s 1st ever home game! All in all it was a fairly successful Homecoming weekend  Till next time..

just a quickie

Hey Everyone!

Well here is just a quick post between classes to see if I got this working right.  Just a little info about myself I am a Sr at MMA in Marine Bio, and starting this year a Minor in SVO.  I've been an RA in Curtis Hall Dorms (mind you the ONLY dorm on this whole campus) for almost 3 years now.  Besides all of that I also work 2 jobs on campus, am the secretary of ABC (activities and Bands committee), one of the Capt of the Women's Sailing team (which we just recently had our 1st regatta!!) and a few other random things. So yes as one can assume, I tend to be a bit busy!

This blog is mainly to not only keep my family up to date on my life, but to let potential students of MMA (and their families) know what life is truly like here.   For anyone looking into the campus, I'm sure you have noticed that our boy to girl ratio isn’t quite up to what most colleges have.  Quite frankly we look like a boy’s school that just started taking in girls.  Which in the realm of college years that is the case.  MMA has been taking in girls for over 20 yrs, I believe, however when you think about the age of the college, that is nothing (the college was founded in 1941) Last I heard the ratio was more towards 6:1. As in 6 boys to every 1 girl.  Now odds like that can sound a little daunting.  Especially if you are parents getting ready to send your baby girl off to school here, chances are what went running through my moms head is running through yours "OH my heavens what am I thinking agreeing to this??"  Some advice for parents, the thought of sending your daughters to mostly male school does get easier to deal with.

For the last 2 years I've been the RA of the "Vault" which is 12 rooms on the 1st floor where the female Non-reg girls are typically housed.  It's called the Vault because the it’s in one of the lowest levels of the building (where most vaults are typically kept) and when the school started accepting females at 1st they were all housed down there with alarms placed on the fire doors, in order to keep the girls "safe".  Well since then the females of MMA have adapted their way into college life here and the alarms have been removed.  This year I finally moved out of the Vault and am now an RA on the second floor which is typically the "non reg" floor.  At the end of last Spring it was looking as though I'd have an ALL male section minus my quad mate (the girl I share a bathroom with) However the class of 2010, had a HUGE increase of Females (the class of 2010 DOUBLED the number of females living in the dorms) so I now have a section which is roughly a little more then 2/3rds Male.  A little different from what I've gotten use to.

Alright, well I've got to get running to class, I'll be sure to update more, and hopefully get some pictures up once I get the hang of this.  However, if you have any questions feel free to email me and ask!  Till next time...
